Working together, the gourds create a simple system that takes on a life of its own, generating a chorus of sound. The gourds communicate via infrared light. The queen gourd plays her note while generating a pulse that signals the other gourds to play. The drones then play their individual notes while forwarding the signal on to other gourds. The effect is that all the gourds are all playing in relative synchrony.
